Interpretation of Lady Gaga's song "Judas"

Why would anyone love Judas? Who loves a traitor? Does this song really mean what it seems to mean?

Summary:

Reading between the Lines

A woman is madly in love with a man who is controlling, lying and betraying, that she blames herself for causing him to sin from her. Even if people around her is telling her to stay away from that person she still clings/hangs on to their relationship.

Reading beyond the Lines

A woman loves her ex because of the bad experience he has taught her. The mood of the song and the 2nd verse made me feel that she has had enough, and she admitted to herself her faults and she has learned from them.

An Argument by Lady Gaga as to why Judas should be loved:

"The Idea that Judas was the ultimate betrayer, well in fact, if that had never occurred the ultimate prophesy in life would have never been fulfilled."

-Lady Gaga on an Interview

I

"I'm in love with Juda-as, Juda-as

When he calls to me, I am ready
I'll wash his feet with my hair if he needs
Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain
Even after three times he betrays me"

(Line 1) She is in love with a traitor.

(L2) She is always in the wait for anything he does; and when he speaks to her, she is always ready(Like she said)

(L3) In the Bible, this was an act done by Mary Magdalene, which meant her interest in Jesus' teachings and exemplifies her devoted and affectionate humility.

(L4) [tongue lies through his brain- the person lies so profoundly that he,himself, believes his lies.] She will forgive him no matter how much of a liar he is.

(L5) Again, like in the Bible, Jesus forgave Peter even before he disowned Jesus three times. This line meant a divine forgiveness.

II

"I'll bring him down, bring him down, down
A king with no crown, king with no crown"

(L1) She's making a stand and she's gonna make him kneel down (maybe this meant that she has to teach him humility or she has to make him fall in love with her)

(L2) [king with no crown- a man who acts like a king but does not have the credentials or he hasn't proven himself worthy a king yet] The man acts controlling but he has no right.

III

"I'm just a Holy fool
Oh, baby, it's so cruel
But I'm still in love with Judas, baby "

(L1) [Holy fool - a somehow oxymoronic phrase and in the same way redundant ,"Holy" and "Fool" are opposites because the first is positive and the second is not, but both are related to devotion...a "holy person" is a person dedicated to Religion, while a common notion for a "Fool" is a person dedicated to a person she loves.

(L2) [it- love] Love is cruel

IV

"I couldn't love a man so purely
Even darkness forgave his goofy ways
I've learned love is like a brick, you can
Build a house or sink a dead body"

(L1) Ironically, She describes her love for Judas as "Pure", which connotes to being free from immorality when most mind sets that loving Judas is an immoral act because it somehow means worshiping the devil. But an explanation below will discuss how Lady Gaga sees Judas acts as heavenly.

(L2) In the first line of this verse she states how she loves him, and in this line she now says that She[Darkness- dark state, in a person this could mean that even in her darkest or at times that she is so sick of all his shenanigans, her darkness forgives him] forgives his unintelligent decisions.

(L3&4) Love can be two different things; it can define your whole life and it can crush it.

V

"In the most Biblical sense,
I am beyond repentance
Fame hooker, prostitute wench vomits her mind
But in the cultural sense
I just speak in future tense
Judas, kiss me if offenced,
Or wear ear condom next time"

(L1&2) Another Irony in here is that God is a Forgiving god, and nothing is unforgivable. But the Lines really mean that she is the one who is not forgiving herself, and describes herself as follows on the 3rd line.

(L3) [fame hooker- she loves fame, she loves to be seen

Prostitute Wench- She gives herself and submits to enslavery

Vomits her mind- she talks a lot, she's a nagger]

*So this is why she thinks she can't be forgiven. She thinks it's her fault his man is sinning. It's because she's attention seeking, obsessive, and she talks a lot.

(L4) But it is in her culture as a woman

(L5) to think of the future.(marriage, kids, commitment, etc)

(L6) She tells her man that if she doesn't want to her what she's saying just shut her mouth, or this may also be connotated to Judas' kiss as to betrayal which will then make the line mean that if he doesn't want what she wants then he'll betray her.

(L7)or if he doesn't want to what she's saying just cover your ears.

VI

"I wanna love you,
But something's pulling me away from you
Jesus is my virtue,
Judas is the demon I cling to
I cling to"

(L1) She really loves him

(L2) but something( her mind, or the people around them) is telling her that she shouldn't.

(L3) She wants to love a man like Jesus( a good man), and this thought is pulling her back from loving the she loves,

(L4) But she is deeply in love with Judas and she clings to him.
