Interpretation of Amy Winehouse's song "Tears Dry on Their Own"

Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own by AmyWinehouse

Summary

This beautiful song is about loving someone who doesn't love you back, or a bad romance. And the hard thing about this song's story is that the person she loves is using her feelings for him to take advantage of her. She regrets everything that she's done with him but whenever they're together she just forgets everything. She feels that love is being foolish. And If she's gonna be a fool, better be fool for the one she loves. But in the latter part of the song, she decides to choose herself. She left him. It was painful for her, yes. But she's looking forward to finding her mr. right.

I
"All I can ever be to you is a darkness that we knew
And this regret I got accustomed to
Once it was so right when we were at our high
Waiting for you in the hotel at night"

(Line 1) She can never be his other half. For him, she's just another girl.
(Line 2) And she regrets being with him, but she keeps on doing it.
(Line 3) Everything feels so right, when they're happy together. But it just happens so fast.
(Line 4) Next thing, she's left in the hotel room waiting for him. It's either he ditched her in the hotel, or he said they'd meet but he didn't come. Either way, she was left alone in the hotel one night.

II
"I knew I hadn't met my match but every moment we could snatch
I don't know why I got so attached
It's my responsibility and you don't owe nothing to me
But to walk away, I have no capacity"

(Line 1,2) She knows she hasn't found the one for her but every time they'd meet, she doesn't know why she feels so attached to him.
(Line 3, 4) And If she'll fall in love and get hurt, she accepts that it's her fault. She wont ask anything of him because she knows he wont love her, but she just can't leave him.

III
"He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own"

(Line 1) Whenever he leaves, her happiness goes with him.
(Line 2) He took away her happiness but she already got used to it.
(Line 3,4) And in her darkest where she cries, she just thinks that he'll come back again then her tears will dry on their own. She'll just wait for his return.

IV
"I don't understand, why do I stress the man
When there's so many better things at hand
We could a never had it all, we had to hit a wall
So this is inevitable withdrawal"

(Line 1,2) She doesn't understand her feelings for that specific man. She keeps on emphasizing HIM above all the other better men around who'll love her.
(Line 3) No matter how they'll try, she knows that they won't make it because he will never love him. And all their foolishness lead them to an accumulation of problems that hit them in the end.
(Line 4) And then the unavoidable happened, they had to separate/leave each other.

V
"Even if I stop wanting you, a perspective pushes through
I'll be some next man's other woman soon
I cannot play myself again, I should just be my own best friend
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men"

(Line 1,2) When she thinks of leaving, she'll just then realize that he'll just become some other man's woman. And then she thinks that If she's gonna be a fool for some man, better be a fool for the man you love or none at all.
(Line 3,4) She can't play the dating game again(dating, falling in love, getting hurt). She should think of her own happiness. She should first learn how to love and take care of her self before she pushes herself for some other guy to forget him. You don't need a lover to feel happy and complete.

VI
"I wish I could sing no regrets and no emotional debts
'Cause as we kiss goodbye the sun sets
So we are history, the shadow covers me
The sky above, a blaze that only lovers see"

(Line 1,2) She feels really down for letting him go, because she knows the pain she'll be into when he leaves. Darkness will come.
(Line 3,4)Now they're no longer together. She's dwelling in the pain he left her, but she knows that after that darkness, a blaze/bright future comes ahead, and she might find the one for her.

  3. ok...the song is actually about her coming to terms with being someones side-piece/mistress. She with a man thats cheating on his partner...they can only meet in "the dar", waiting on him in hotels..,they could never have it all...she shoulda never got attached knowing they would hit a wall sooner or kater and hafta call it quits.

  4. Is it possible that the song could be about a trend or feeling in her life that goes beyond a singular relationship? It seems like due to the way her life story was exploited by the media during her life, that the feeling of despondency she references might be due to a pattern of failed relationships as a result of her fame circumstances, or related to a larger feeling of loneliness and solitude as expressed through the story of a relationship?

When she says "and this regret I got accustomed to" in line 2, it seems like she is saying that she either regrets being with the guy who the song is about, or she is used to feeling regret in her relationships because of the actions she takes/circumstances she is in (in regard to her relationships and how they are affected by her fame). The interpretation of this song says that she "regrets being with him, but she keeps on doing it," but I wonder if her regret could be about the things she is forced to do, and the way she ends up treating people because of her fame, rather than about her interactions with this man.

In the fourth verse, she says, "we could have never had it all, we had to hit a wall, so this is inevitable withdrawal." The interpretation of this section says that no matter how much effort she puts into the relationship, she knows that he won't truly love her back, and so all of the problems eventually catch up to them, at which point they have to stop seeing each other. However, to me it sounds like she is saying that they were doomed from the start, and bound to reach a point at which they could not continue their relationship, and the withdrawal that she talks about as a result is her feeling of missing the guy, which she knew would come since the beginning.

While it's possible that the song could definitely be telling the story of a single relationship she had, I think it's also a possibility that she is talking about a trend that existed through multiple relationships, as she had a lot of factors impacting her personal life (because of her fame and addiction) that would have made it difficult to maintain a relationship. From my understanding of her life, the feelings that she talks about in this song were likely pretty common in her life, and not exclusive to this one relationship, which leads me to think that maybe she is writing about a broader period of time/trend in her life, and explaining it to listeners through the lens of a relationship.
